90's Fashion Is Back Baby!
Back in the 90's we all looked to our favorite musicians for the newest trends. Since music videos were actually played on MTV in those days all we had to do was turn on the TV, watch, listen and learn. Aww, what simple times. Recently the more I go out shopping the more I see things that I wore when I was in high school. There is no doubt about it, 90’s style is back in vogue and watching 90's music videos and legendary 90's fashion movies like Clueless, Jawbreaker, Reality Bites, Empire Records, The Craft, Romey and Michelle's High School Reunion, etc. and it made me wonder why it ever went out of style. Here are a few looks from H&M, Charlotte Russe, Hot Topic and American Eagle that scream the signature look of 90's pop culture. Here is a list of music videos that inspired the outfits I found while shopping.
No Doubt- Don't Speak
Back in the 90’s Gwen was the SKA/PUNK QUEEN! Gwen had her signature cholla inspired hair and makeup with a punk twist thanks to her awesome wardrobe. If you watch any No Doubt video from the 90’s you are almost guaranteed to see Gwen’s belly button because she was always rocking a crop top. If you were a young girl in the 90's who liked rock music you definitely tried to emulate Gwen's style. This outfit from H&M has that same punk/skater/ska unique spirit of the 90’s.
Note the crop tops and polka dots.
Aerosmith- Amazing and Crying
Believe it or not, Alicia Silverstone AKA Cher Horwitz was a fashion Icon even before she stared in Clueless in 1995. This was possible thanks to a string of amazing videos from the legendary band Aerosmith. Cryin, and Amazing were released in 1993. The songs were from the Get a Grip album and were huge hits in the 90’s for Aerosmith. Siverstone's portrayal of the Crazy girl in Crying and the fantasy girl in Amazing had every 90’s girl trying to replicate her style. There was another song called Crazy that stared Steven Tyler's daughter Liv Tyler but the clothes in that video weren't that great. Below: The polka dot lace up shirt and yellow top are from H&M and the pink floral top and sweater are from American Eagle.
Note the laced-up dress, flannel shirts, and floral patterns.
Janet Jackson - If-1993
Janet Jackson had abs to die for, as in the work it takes to get abs like that would kill most of us. In her teenage years she was a little bit heavy but by the time Rhythm Nation 1814 was released in was released in 1989 she lost some weight. The first single of the album was the title track and in the video, Janet was covered from head to toe. Although she was covered you could tell she was sporting a much slimmer bod. The release of the single for Rhythm Nation 1814 was soon followed by the song Love Will Never Do Without You. This video was full of some of the hottest male video hos of the day. Even with all these sexy men walking around Janet’s physique took center stage. Crop tops soon flooded every modern fashion store in every local mall across the country and now, they are back. From cropped tee’s to cropped sweaters the crop top is back in style. Love Will Never Do Without You was technically an 80’s song so here is If from the album Janet released in 1993. Janet’s gorgeous sexy abs on display once again. Below: Black top and leggings are from Charlotte Russe.
The Spice Girls
Love them or hate them, you cannot deny 90’s style is back when plastic clothes, bustier tops, platform shoes and the phrase “Girl Power” is everywhere. If you were around in the 90’s you know that all of those fashion statements that were made popular by the Spice Girls. Each girl had a style of her own and most young girls could relate to at least one of them. With their catchy tunes and unique style, the Spice Girls were a force to be reckoned with. Designers everywhere stumbled over each other to copy their signature style to get to the masses. Below: The skirt and sweater are from Hot Topic and the shoes are from Charlotte Russe.
Note the metallic fabrics and platforms
Lisa Lobe- Stay
We cannot have a serious conversation about 90's fashion and not mention Lisa Lobe. She was the anti it girl. The I don't care and that makes me cool chick. She was the most iconic "art-sheek" chick of the 1990's. She mostly wore black and is solely responsible for making retro 60's glasses frames cool again. Those signature frames can still be found at every eye doctors office and nonprescription versions can be found at any clothing store with the accessories. Lisa Lobe is technically a one hit wonder but this song gained her a very faithful following. Below: Dress and overalls from Charlotte Russe.
Note the what is now totally stereo typical art "cool" chick style.
