What I Learned From Keeping Up with The Kardashians & Why Hating on Them is Internalized Misogyny

Today is international woman’s day: and although there are many women on the face of this planet that deserve to be admired, I’d like to talk about why Kris, Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, Kendal, and Kylie do not deserve the hate they have been getting over the past decade on TV. In light of the #freebrittany movement, I’d like to take this opportunity today to analyze why and how the hate these women get is a symptom of the toxic patriarchal society in the united states and why it needs to stop.

Now I know that some would like to argue that the Kardashian/Jenner women are not good role models, but I really beg to differ and challenge you to ask yourself why you feel that way. Imagine any one of those women was your friend, your sister, your daughter. Wouldn’t you be proud of her accomplishments? I hope that reading this article might change your opinion and help more women get on the bandwagon of women supporting women.

I’ve been a fan of the show since about 2010 and what first drew me in was to see a glamorous, beautiful group of young women that were not stick thin and blonde. They were business owners, their father, an attorney made famous by the OJ Simpson case had died a few years previous. With the money he left his 3 daughters, they decided to open a women’s boutique in Calabasas. A suburb of Los Angela’s where they all lived.

From then on, the show became my guilty pleasure. From time to time I would admit I was a fan and people would trash the show and I would ask if they had ever watched the show. 99 times out of 100, the answer was no. To this day people claim that “Kim is only famous for a sex tape.” and to that I say, name a porn star who is as famous as Kim. Most people can’t. It’s really silly to think anyone can do a sex tape and become famous overnight.

Duck Dynasty, American Chopper, Monster Garage, Fast and Loud, and Pawn Stars, all shows that are arguably about the same thing, a family-owned business. Yet it is very seldom that the experience of these men, or where these men got their money comes into question. No one ever calls these men famous for being famous. So why is it that most of the time when someone is talking about the Kardashian/Jenner’s they seem to discredit the hard work of these women by suggesting that they are where they are because of some kind of handout.

Regardless of how you feel about them in a personal light, there is no way to deny that these women have absolutely dominated in every single business that they have ever been a part of. From shoes, clothes, makeup, and technology, these women are the dominant and driving force behind most of pop culture today.

Over the course of the past 14 years, I have seen them stand together through lots of adversity. Relationships that form then fall apart, near-death experiences, betrayal, and of course the transition of Caitlyn. They also shared lots of happy times, the birth of 10 children, an empire or dynasty essentially being built, marriages, reunions, lots of family vacations, award ceremonies, birthday and holiday parties. This family let us into not only their home but their lives.

Everything they have has come from a lot of work and sacrifice. Could you be brave enough to allow a camera into your home after you were robbed? Or into the delivery room of your first-born child? Could you be brave enough to have a camera follow you after your baby daddy was caught cheating for a second time? Most people would say no and these people said yes and were able to capture the majority of the past 10 years of their lives on TV.

They owe everything to Kris and Kourtney

They say the devil works hard but Kris Jenner works harder. Kris Jenner created the position of momager. She manages all of her children and has basically served each and every one of them their dreams on a silver platter. If there’s a way to get it done, Kris will get it done. The term boss is an understatement.

Kris was friends with Ryan Seacrest. Most know him as the host of American Idol and a few other shows but he is also a producer on KUWTK. She pitched the idea to Seacrest of allowing camera’s into their home and businesses and the rest is history. The show centers around Kim, the most popular one of the sisters due to her working relationship at the time with Paris Hilton, Brandy, and Lindsey Lohan.

Although Kim is at the center of the show, Kourtney has had more screen time than anyone else on the show. In these later seasons, Kourtney has decided she doesn’t want to be as involved with the show. Kortney is notoriously indecisive and the discussion of a filming schedule led to a physical altercation between Kim and Kortney in Khloe’s bedroom. Soon after Kourtney decided it was time for her to take a step back. Later that year the decision was made that the 2021 season would be the last.

If you’re a woman who hates on them it is internalized misogyny or you’re probably just jealous.

If you are a woman who hates these women, it’s probably because you’re a pick-me girl. There is nothing wrong with saying, that’s not my thing, I cannot relate, I do not like the show, but it’s another thing to villainize these women for being whores. Thankfully most women in 2021 can agree with the popularization of Only Fans that if that’s what a woman feels comfortable with, it is her prerogative to make a living any way she sees legally fit.

Although it has been argued that Kim, Khloe, and Kylie are setting unrealistic body goals by their refusal to address the elephant in their pants, that is of course how they lose weight but their buttocks either remain the same or increases. I do agree that it is harmful that they refuse to admit to having plastic surgery, Kylie most of all. The rate at which her face changed from the age of 18-19 is painfully obvious that she has had some work done… like a lot of work. I’m all for feeling good about yourself, I believe if you are unhappy with something you should change it but be honest about it.

It is long overdue that the double standard of men being sexual creatures and women being whores for enjoying sex is thrown out the window. CONSENT is the key here and if a woman chose to put her body on display it doesn’t make her a whore, it makes her an exhibitionist. If you had the same opportunities that they did you would be a fool not to take it. Everyone has nipples, why are a woman’s nipples so taboo but a man’s are not?

Why are men considered more of a man by their sexual conquests but a woman is a whore? Yes, I’ve heard the old key and lock BS, but the truth is men are intimidated by a woman with sexual experience. What’s the difference between a woman having sex 500 times with the same man or having sex 500 times with 500 men… Nothing.

Kim’s Sex Tape was Released Without Her Permission and By Today’s Revenge Porn Laws the Distribution of the Tape Would Be Illegal.

An unknown source provided the explicit tape to Vivid entertainment who paid $1M for it. Kim sued but settled out of court for $5M. Under revenge porn laws, that did not exist at the time, the release of pornographic material without the consent of an individual is prohibited. The fact that people still say that Kim is famous for a sex tape that was released without her consent is absolutely horrid. Again, imagine this is a friend, a daughter, a sister.

Funny enough, Kim’s brother Rob was almost arrested for releasing explicit pictures of his ex-fiancé and baby mama Blac Chyna. Blac Chyna never pressed charges and actually “liked” one of the explicit photos that Rob posted on Instagram.

Family First

As many of you who are familiar with my blog may know, I come from an abusive environment. I have one sister and one brother and we are not really that close although I wish we were. I have not heard from my biological father in over 13 years and if he called me from his death bed tomorrow I would ignore the call. Although if my brother or sister were to call me I would help, I cannot honestly say that we are as close as the Kardashian/Jenner siblings.

This show has been a really beautiful depiction of what a healthy blended family looks like and for that, I must admit I am truly jealous. When you didn’t have that fairy tale childhood full of family vacations, never wanting for anything, and always having a best friend that you live with who has your back it’s definitely something that leaves a hole inside you. To see these siblings, pair off, have their ups and downs, and always come together no matter what is a truly beautiful thing and is my absolute favorite part of the show.

I have to mention The Lord. Scott Disick is probably everyone’s favorite part of the show. He’s an outsider and his brutal honesty is enduring, yet he’s also a train wreck; you just cannot look away. We watch Scott deal with being an outsider and his struggle with alcoholism and the untimely death of his parents. Throughout the show, we see him go from party promoter to alcoholic, to adoring father. Understandably so after the birth of their 3rd child, Kourtney reaches a breaking point and has to break the romantic bond between the 2 of them.

Scott has become a business owner and an amazing father. He and Khloe are closer than he probably is with Kourtney and it is apparent that the entire family finally accepts him as one of their own despite the fact that Kourtney and Scott are no longer together. To be honest, I think we all hoped that Scott would get it together and they would work it out. The way that Kourtney has drawn back from the show is an indication that she is resentful of the show putting their problems in the public eye. While Rob was telling his sisters how he wants to do season 2 of Rob and Chyna, Kourtney briefly brings up that point.

I really hope this depiction of this family has helped you understand that it is unfair to form an opinion unless you understand what you’re talking about. It’s so unfortunate that we allow the ignorant to have a voice at times. With that being said please remember that all women are fucking magnificent creatures and in the right environment, they can accomplish amazing things. If you are a woman it’s long past due that we all support each other and stop allowing men to put us down. This show is a shining example of what women can do when they support each other.
